Gestalt Coaching & Resistance
![]()
Faculty and Program Chairs: Herb Stevenson, MA, CPC, CDP and Rick Maurer, MA, author of Beyond The Wall of Resistance, Why Don't You Want What I Want?, and Building Capacity for Change Sourcebook.
People enter coaching because they want something. Gestalt theory suggests that wants are accompanied by resistance. Coaches must know how to work with that dance between aspirations and fears. We will show you how our approach harnesses those forces in ways that energize and focus the client's work. And how this approach can help clients recognize more options for facing their challenges. This engaging and energy-infused session is ideal for OD professionals, OD consultants, coaches, change leaders, educators and business consultants.
So Much to Do, So Little Time: Ensuring OD Capabilities Meet Company Needs
Bill Baetz, Ph.D., Senior Director, The Group for Organizational Effectiveness, Inc.
Most organizations face a steady stream of OD needs related to change, team, talent, structure, process, and performance issues. Yet few employ enough OD specialists to meet all those needs. This session examines ways organizations are responding to this gap. It describes how companies are maximizing the contribution of their OD experts and developing OD capabilities throughout HR and the line. It highlights several common challenges and success factors for building OD capabilities and "making it work."

An Essential Perspective: Bringing Spirituality into Organizational Development
John D. Carter, Ph.D., President
What is "spirituality"? What role does spirituality play in our work as interveners in corporate America? Can we transcend ego-, ethnic-, and culture-centric orientations? For many years, John Carter has integrated his concept of 7th Degree with the Gestalt Center for Organization & Systems Development's body of knowledge (Gestalt OSD). Spirituality is a key component of every Gestalt OSD conceptual frame of reference. This session presents one of these Gestalt OSD theoretical frameworks, and we invite you to explore your own frames of reference through this lens.

of OD's traditional core. At the end of this quick journey, you will
have insights and tools to: continue developing your cultural
competence; check cultural assumptions embedded in OD practice;

Broadening the Discussion on Diversity by including Personality
Becky Sandifer, SPHR
This session explores how broadening our framework on Diversity by including personality supports the goals of Inclusiveness, Understanding, and Empathy.
According to research by Carl Jung, personality is part of our genetic makeup. We are hardwired to think and behave in a certain way. Organizations benefit by encouraging the natural gifts of their employees and creating a culture that allows those gifts to flourish. We can improve interactions with others by understanding the whole person.

rapidly-changing environments. In many cases, building resilient and adaptive
capabilities in a shifting world requires not just organizational change, but
outright transformation. Carolyn will share the latest thoughts and practices on
different types of organizational change and transformation and the adaptive
capabilities that will increasingly be a differentiating source of competitive
advantage in the future.

Succeeding at Enterprise-Wide Change: Using a Common Methodology to Drive Results
Linda Ackerman Anderson
Most organizations launch change efforts of different types and magnitudes with conflicting or inadequate change models. These efforts can create chaos, inefficiency, and poor results. Without understanding the enterprise-wide change agenda and ensuring adequate capacity and infrastructure for it, leaders are inadvertently setting their organizations up to fail. This session presents the Change Leader's Roadmap Methodology and explores how embedding a common change methodology helps executives, change leaders, and consultants achieve greater success with change.
Theory-Based Insights on the Practice of Organizational Change and Development
Frank Barrett & Mike Manning, Professors, School of Human & Organizational Development, Doctoral Program
Theory can be used to guide strategies for organizational change and development. Explore conceptual distinctions that provide general orientations to the change consulting process, including: theories that identify the factors that produce or explain change vs. those that emphasize how to bring about change; theories of planned change that emphasize the role of the change agent vs. perspectives on unplanned change that imply a different consulting orientation; and contrasting implications for change consulting from macro, middle and micro perspectives.
